A World-First Hickory Handicap Framework
One of the most important achievements of the New Zealand Society of Hickory Golf has been the development of a recognised handicap system for players using hickory equipment.
Following the establishment of the Society, discussions were held with Golf New Zealand regarding how hickory scores could be recorded and handicaps administered within the national golfing framework.
The objective was to create a credible, consistent and transparent system that recognised the performance differences between traditional hickory equipment and modern golf clubs while still operating within the World Handicap System.
The result was the creation of The Hickory Club in 2023.
What Is The Hickory Club?
The Hickory Club is a virtual golf club accepted within the Golf New Zealand framework and incorporated into the DotGolf system.
It allows players to establish and maintain a recognised World Handicap System index specifically for hickory golf.
This initiative is believed to be the first fully integrated national WHS hickory handicap system of its kind.
Benefits of a Hickory Handicap
The Hickory Club enables:
- eligible hickory scores to be submitted and recorded;
- hickory handicaps to be administered consistently;
- competitions to be conducted on a fair and transparent basis;
- players from different regions to compete using a common system;
- hickory performance to be separated from modern equipment performance; and
- New Zealand players to compete domestically and internationally with greater confidence.
The handicap framework provides an important connection between the traditions of hickory golf and the administration of the modern game.
It demonstrates that traditional equipment and contemporary golf systems can work together successfully.
Why a Separate Hickory Handicap Matters
Playing with hickory equipment creates different performance outcomes from playing with modern clubs.
Traditional wooden shafts, historic clubhead designs, reduced distance and greater variation in ball flight all influence scoring.
A dedicated hickory handicap allows those differences to be reflected fairly and consistently. It also encourages players to submit scores regularly and participate confidently in competitions throughout New Zealand.
